Whether you’re selling furniture, insurance policies or even trying to find potential buyers for properties, getting noticed on social media can be a huge advantage for your business.

It’s not just about going viral and gaining a million followers - just assembling a loyal and relevant audience of a few thousand people is already enough to help signal boost both your current marketing efforts and the efforts associated with any new product you decide to launch.

So without further ado, let’s take a look at a few things you should know about before throwing the kitchen sink at social media marketing!

1 – Target your relevant audience

Facebook and Instagram ads in particular are based on a relevancy score, the more relevant your ad is to your target audience, the less you will pay for a result. It really is quite that simple!

It’s equally as important that you make sure you’re posting engaging organic content with a specific target demographic in mind.

Having a clear audience in mind will also help you find the groups where those users congregate, or which hashtags they use, depending on the platform you’re using.


2 – Post consistently, but not for the sake of posting

Naturally, the initial apparent lack of results can be off-putting. But don’t let this discourage you from posting on social media, be patient. Building your brand and becoming reputable is a marathon, not a sprint. Consistently putting out relevant content is the key to success in this field.

You can also jump on any social media trends that you feel your business could join in with - such as national days, challenges and other third-party content.

However, if you’re struggling for fresh content - it is quite futile to share something for the sake of it. Remember, quality over quantity, don’t worry about missing the odd day or two. Organic social media content is disposable, meaning that unless you have shared a competition or business announcement, the chances are that users will not see this content again (unless they visit your page of course).

3 – Try different styles of social posts

There is an abundance of ways to post about a brand or a product, or to create posts that will connect with your target audience. Make sure you’re regularly trying out new styles and approaches to see what gets the biggest, most positive response from your audience. Once you have found a style that works, stick with it.

It’s important to rein in your experimentation as your audience starts to grow. After all, someone who followed your brand page because they enjoyed the behind-the-scenes and humorous posts you’ve been making might stop following the page if it suddenly switches to posting nothing but sales messaging and irrelevant content.

4 – Be helpful and responsive

Put your expertise in your field to good use. Try to be helpful to customers who are facing issues within your area of expertise, even if they don’t follow the page!

Maybe someone has sent your business a direct message asking something which is already stated on your website (frustrating at times, of course). Don’t presume they know this, get back to them swiftly as this could eventually result in a lead.

If this doesn’t materialise, the user will still appreciate your effort to get back to them and may even refer you to someone else due to their positive experience.

Being helpful online may seem not to make a difference in the short term, but it helps your brand earn a good reputation.

5 – Don’t be afraid to run social media events

Competitions, giveaways, sales, quiz questions and other online events are all great ways to keep your audience engaged and earn more followers. It can also be a good excuse to get your social media followers to visit your website or sign up for your newsletter.

Alternatively, you can get your audience to share your post to enter - this is a fantastic, free way of gaining reach, as this post is then opened up to multiple audiences creating a snowball effect.

Your post significantly reaches more users and the users sharing your post are in the running to win a prize from your business - everyone's a winner.


6 - Make friends with influencers

You don’t necessarily need to sponsor an influencer to earn their goodwill. Plenty of content producers in niches relevant to your product would be eager for the opportunity to interview a member of your staff or tour one of your facilities. And of course, sponsoring influencers is also a good way to get more people to pay attention to your page and your products.
