Going ‘viral’ is often an overused term on social media. However, in the literal meaning of the word, most well-crafted posts on social media will go 'viral' to some degree.
When a post/tweet/picture or video is shared by a large percentage of the people that see it, that's when things really do start to get exciting. Your phone gets that hot it feels like it's going to explode and dealing with the sheer volume of comments, likes and shares for a single client becomes a full-time job for half of your team. Trust me I know!
Recently, Tom Cruise visited one of our clients for a meal. A member of staff took a snap and sent it to us to distribute on their social media pages. And this is where it was important to step back, to take a moment to consider the impact the photo could have. Rather than just firing it out there as quickly as we could, saying something along the lines of 'It's brilliant to welcome Tom Cruise’ or ‘Guess who dined at our restaurant', we took the time to speak to the restaurant's management team, to find out what he had eaten, who he was with etc. all in the hope we could find the perfect angle.
On this occasion, we struck gold! Tom really enjoyed a dish and re-ordered it. As soon as we heard this, we went to work and wrote the following tweet with his picture.
It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Tom Cruise to Asha's Birmingham yesterday evening.
Tom ordered our famous Chicken Tikka Masala and enjoyed it so much that as soon as he had finished, he ordered it all over again - The greatest compliment!
The story that the public, the press and the TV news channels picked up was that he had ordered two curries. Within hours, we had press enquires coming through their social media pages, as well as local national and international news agencies requesting usage of the picture. It also made the front page of national newspapers with the headline of 'Two Tikka Tom'.
The tweet ended up hitting in excess of 6 million people (so far!) and bookings at the restaurant soared. Tom Cruise visited various restaurants during his stay in Birmingham, but the coverage was minimal. The truth is that a great picture of a celeb will get you so far… but adding a story to it as well will get you a lot further.
So did he really order two curries?
The short answer is yes! The long answer is that Tom was dining with a group who were sharing the dishes and they all enjoyed the dish so much that Tom re-ordered it for his whole party. We were a little hazy with the complete truth, but … there are only so many characters you can fit into a tweet!
The food at Asha's is amazing. If you’re ever in Birmingham and looking for the ultimate Indian dining experience, make sure you pay them a visit.
